The First Pride Was A Riot (2022) is a digital poster illustration commemorating New York City’s 1969 Stonewall Riots.

Fed up of routine arrests, in which “being homosexual and transsexual in public” was a crime, the patrons of Stonewall Inn fought back against being jailed by police. Trans queens Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were among those who participated in the uprising. In the LGBTQ community, the first Pride was a riot against police brutality.

The First Pride Was a Riot was reproduced with Race Forward for their 2023 recurring donor calendar art set.

This illustration is available as a poster and greeting card.
