Painted with Cori Nakamura Lin, Renter Power (2018) is a 40 foot mural featuring stories and experiences of low-income renters and renters of color in South Minneapolis. It is located on the Columbus Ave underpass on the Midtown Greenway walking and biking trail.
Cori accumulated published research on renting in South Minneapolis while I helped collect over 100 survey responses from renters in the Powderhorn neighborhood. These statistics and personal testimonies – as well as community feedback – informed the design of this mural. It includes the difficult truths about renting in South Minneapolis as well as large-scale illustrations of renters’ favorite parts about living in South.
The mural features seven South Minneapolis renters who graciously represented some of our diverse communities: Joanna & Irina, Sophea & Yves, Hawa, Jared, and Ixel. This project was supported by Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association and CURA.
