In Deerfox Minhwa (2020), I used gouache paints to emulate the artistic style of 민화 (minhwa), a Korean folk art. The Deerfox character emerged from a vision I had when I was engaging in art for play. He embodies silliness, creativity, and pranks.

Popular in the 19th and 20th centuries, 민화 was painted by self-taught Korean artists, most of whom were working class, to bless their homes, engage in humor, and to keep out bad spirits.

Deerfox Minhwa was the title image of my solo exhibition, Home Keeping/Keeping Home (2020-2021), held at Keefer Court.
